March Madness Live

I interned at Warner Bros Discovery on the NCAA March Madness digital team. This team oversees the Emmy award winning March Madness Live (MML) streaming experience, which attracts almost 10 million viewers each year.

Since my internship was in the summer, I spent the majority of my time working across desktop, mobile and TV in preparation for next year’s tournament.

context

My first project was designing cards for the March Madness TV app. These cards live on the top swimlane of TV/connected devices, meaning that it would be the first thing customers see when they open the app. From a design perspective, I wanted to make the cards look more visually consistent with MML on web and mobile.

design solution

I chose to use a content tile design similar to the NCAA website. This design accounted for multiple content types, such as game highlights, streams and video articles.

UI design

Scale was an important factor in this design. The content tiles are sized specifically for most TV dimensions so that the second swimlane of content peeks through at the bottom, incentivizing users to scroll down on the remote.

My second project was creating a web game for the Watch 2 Earn program (W2E), where dedicated sports fans earn points to purchase merchandise, memorabilia and other goods. I created this trivia web app that spanned across multiple sports.

Feedback

Collaborating with a senior designer and product manager, I led the design for the W2E Multi-Sport Game. I optimized this game for mobile, since many W2E users actually play games on the go.

Multi sport tab

Since W2E wasn't restricted to any one sport, I included a navbar that allowed users to shift between sports. This also displayed a "live" indicator in case commentary shows happened to be running as users were playing.

Similar to other trivia games, key features in this UI included multi option select, timer, points and scoreboard.

Responsive design

Of course, I also designed a desktop version of the game that allowed users to see all the sports offered to them.

Takeaways
  • Embrace new ideas:
I was intimidated coming into such a large organization, especially as an intern. That quickly went away when I got to sit in on a meeting where product managers would pitch new features for 30 minutes. Over the next two weeks, I put together a pitch for a chat feature that I presented at this meeting. While it didn't get approved, it was a great lesson in exploring bold ideas.
  • Atomic and systematic design:
My first few weeks were spent making components in the design system. This helped me understand MML design from a system level, making it easier to work on larger features later on.
Thank you

Thanks so much to the MML team and my manager John for making me feel welcome! Could not have done it without your support and guidance.
